Fresh is the Word is back after a six month (sorry!) hiatus with brand new episodes. For the first episode back, your host Kelly “K-Fresh” Frazier talks to Ann Arbor, Michigan-based electronic music producer Tadd Mullinix. Under his hip-hop project alias Dabrye, he recently released his new album Three/Three on Ghostly International, the final installment of his album trilogy which started in 2001 with One/Three and is the first Dabrye full-length since 2006’s Two/Three. On this episode, we talk about the history of the Dabrye moniker along with how he was able to wade the waters of an experimental hip-hop sound that he was an early influencer of.

Dabrye’s Three/Three is available now and features guests Guilty Simpson, Ghostface Killah, Doom, La Peace, Fatt Father, Roc Marciano, Quelle Chris, Danny Brown, Jon Wayne, Shigeto, Nolan The Ninja, Phat Kat aka Ronnie Euro, G&D, Clear Soul Forces, Kadence, Intricate Dialect & Silas Green, and Denmark Vessey.

This week’s pick is the album Sometimes A Rose Will Grow In Concrete by the Los Angeles-based soul music artist Sy Smith. Sy has also written songs for Macy Gray, Carlos Santana, Ronny Jordan, Brand New Heavies, Gerald Albright, and Mya, among others. She has toured with Whitney Houston, Usher, Meshell Ndegeocello and Chris Botti. Most personally, she’s worked with The Foreign Exchange collective, who have been friends to the podcast and K-Fresh for a long time. For more information on Sy Smith, visit sysmith.com.
