Back on July 27th, at the Blind Pig in Ann Arbor, Michigan, I caught a show featuring legendary Hip-Hop DJ/producer/turntablist Kid Koala, along with music artist/producer and cartoonist Lealani.
Kid Koala recently released his Creatures of the Late Afternoon double vinyl album which is also a board game! I’ve been a fan of Lealani for a while now and was excited to finally see her live (and meet her). She released her debut album Fantastic Planet in 2019 (which needs a vinyl and cassette reissue again!) along with her collaborative project with the producer SnakeFoot in 2021.
Kid Koala showed off the album/board game with stories of its creation, along with a fun set balancing a party vibe and turntablism. He even performed this routine around the song “Moon River” from Breakfast at Tiffany’s that was awesome.
Kid Koala would bring Lealani on at times to perform some of her own solo vocal material and songs from her other project The Pezheads, along with slapping on dope instrumental beats.
